You need your body fat percentage not only to know where you stand, but to also to be able to more accurately estimate how many calories you should consume. Why? Because in determining your daily calorie allowance you should only take into account your lean body mass. The reason being fat tissue does not require energy – it is energy itself. So why feed it?

In order to find out your body fat percentage and consequently your lean body mass you have two choices:

1) You can ask a fitness professional in your local gym to help you with that; or 2) you can get a cheep caliper and do it yourself in the privacy of your home.

Another way to measure your fat (and by the way this method is a lot faster and a lot more convenient) is through a device that runs a low charge electrical current through your body. The device measures the amount of water in your body and then calculates the body fat percentage as a ratio of total body weight : muscle mass.

It isn't the most accurate way of measuring body fat, but if done in the same time of the day and under the same conditions (morning immediately after waking and before drinking or eating anything is best for me), it could give you a pretty consistent reading.

The device I use for myself and for my personal training clients is Omron Fat Analyzer. It is cheap and fast.
