Natural Caffeine

gurarana

If you are interested in spearing your glycogen while using your fat for energy during cardio (like I am), then you should try caffeine. Not only will you use the stored fat for fuel, but you will feel less pain during the physical activity, which will ultimately let you exercise longer.

You will need 200 – 300mg caffeine before cardio. You can down one - two cups regular coffee or you can take a supplement. When looking for a caffeine product, look for one that says: Caffeine Anhydrous.

Go for the natural caffeine - Guarana. I've found that the Guarana extract from Source Naturals provide the amount I need - about 200 mg a capsule.

Acetyl L-Carnitine

Acetyl L-Carnitine

Acetyl L-Carnitine is what helps the fats penetrate the mitochondria membrane, where they are used for energy. In other words Acetyl L-Carnitine is the key factor that transports fat to the fat burning zone.

Acetyl L-Carnitine works synergistically with caffeine, as the second frees up the fats from the fat cells and the first takes them to the fat burning sites. You will need about 1 – 2 gr. of it before cardio session to optimize the utilization of the fats.

Acetyl L-Carnitine can be quite expensive if you don’t know where and what to look for. I personally like the Source Naturals Acetyl L-Carnitine

Green Tea Extract

The green tea extract is a powerful fat burning agent, which works synergistically with the alkaloid caffeine. In fact I wrote a whole article on the fat burning properties of green tea. You can reed it here if you are interested.

The dose for optimal fat loss would be 250 – 500 mg. standardized green tea extract before cardio. As I already said it would be best if you combine it with 200 – 300 mg. caffeine.

One thing, though: be careful when choosing a green tea extract supplement – you should find one that is polyphenols and EGCG standardized. My choice is Now Green Tea Extract:

Green Tea for brewing

If you prefer not to take green tea in a supplement form, you can still benefit from it by drinking real brewed green tea. You can have a cup or two before your cardio session and throughout the day afterwards.

I personally enjoy brewed green tea and have lots of it almost every day. The way I do it is I dump 5 green tea bags in an empty gallon jug, fill it up with filtered water (distilled is best) and stick it in the fridge overnight. I have a gallon of brewed green tea in the morning.

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of green teas for brewing out there. I like organic ones. My personal choice is Long Life Organic Green Tea. Tazo and Yogi Green Teas are also good choices.
