You Were Built for 70 Years. Science Just Gave You 120

The 18% Problem

Only 18% of adults reach post-conventional ego development.

That’s Susan Cook-Greuter’s data. Nine stages of adult ego development. In the West, we train for stage 4 – the Achiever. That’s the END of the conventional stages. And less than one-third of all adults reach it. Most never get past Expert.

The Achiever runs on output. Goals. Autonomy through accomplishment. Captain of my ship.

That ship was built for a 70-year voyage.

Now longevity science is about to extend the ocean by 30 to 50 years. Inside the next 15 to 20. Maybe less. And AI is accelerating us into a post-labor economy where output stops being a viable identity scaffold.

So 82% of adults are walking into a 120-year life with an identity built for 70.

This isn’t about retirement. It’s not about hobbies. It’s about whether you’ve built someone capable of carrying 60 more years when the achievement runway runs out.

Jung said the first 40 years are research. With longevity science, the curriculum just got 30-50 years longer. Nobody wrote the second half of that book yet.

And here’s what makes it harder. As life accelerates, we have less and less time to pause, reflect, take a snapshot of who we are right now. Experiences accumulate. Wisdom doesn’t keep up.

30 more years of the same person doesn’t add up to more life. Just more time. More time in confusion.
